Interior Design

The spaces we work and live in are all designed to support our activities and allow us to feel comfortable in our surroundings. This is interior design at its core – creating environments that reflect who we are and what we do. Here we explain more about interior design and the crucial role interior architects play in the process.

What is interior design?

Interior design is a profession that focusses on space planning and architecture, creative functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces for people to live and work in. While anyone can create their own interior design, professionals undergo school and formal training that enables them to take a broader range of factors into consideration when working on a project.

What are the basics of interior design?

The purpose of interior design is to create a room that serves the needs of the people that use and interact with them. Good interior design reflects the resident’s personality, while also providing space and functionality, looking pleasing to the eye while also improving their quality of life.

Always try to start a design scheme with a theme – which can be inspired by almost anything, whether it’s a particular colour scheme you like, an item of furniture from a certain era or maybe you start from scratch with a moodboard. Once the practicalities of how the room will be used have been met, you can then focus on the aesthetics and making it a beautiful place to be.

What do interior architects do?

Interior architects focus on the inside of the property rather than the external elements, changing the structure and designing the layout and architecture. Their work is more technical-based, working closely with contractors, builders and technicians to build the interior space.

Quite often an interior architect will work in tandem with an interior designer, especially when it comes to heating and lighting systems that will influence the aesthetics. As interior design as evolved through the years, more designers have become able to take on some of the technical aspects, so there is usually a crossover between the two professions on most projects.
